Originally made as a vase for flowers, the series Neighborhood began as a functional object.
At the same time, however, it did not feel like a purely practical object or simply “craft.” While capable of functioning as a crafted object, this work holds an ambiguous position between craft and art.

The longer these objects were observed throughout the making process, the more questions emerged about what kind of work was truly being pursued between craft and art. What is the most important thing in a work? How can the work being made be understood or classified? These questions continued to surface during the process.

Rather than being placed as a designed object on a table, the series Neighborhood came to be understood as a sculpture. This work marks a moment shaped by an ongoing desire to create something closer to “formativeness itself.”
